ABOUT DR. MURPHY
Clients
want to be relieved of the psychosocial burdens that bother them and to be empowered
for continued growth and development. That's my approach to Therapy: together,
you and I explore the interplay of social, cultural, psychological, and situational
factors that may interfere with a balanced quality of life. I enjoy offering
a helping hand to my clients as you come to terms with who you really are, and
to live productive, responsible, satisfying lives within the boundaries that
you want to establish for yourself. At the same time, we can explore your full
potential for change, and identify specific changes that you may wish to implement
in your life. I help you to clarify your own values and goals, and to work out
strategies for achieving them.
A broad interdisciplinary academic background and work experience in clinical
and applied Behavioral Sciences helps me to help you. My Ph.D. is Applied Sociology.
I also have two Masters degrees (M.S., Applied Social Anthropology and M.A., Psychological
Services), and a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Counseling. I've been
providing psychosocial therapy services for individuals, couples, and groups
in Northern Virginia since 1999. My work is based upon Cognitive-Behaviorism,
Rogers' Person-Centered Therapy, and Psychodynamic Therapy.
